Toll collection begins on newest segment of Loop 49

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - The free ride is over on the newest segment of Loop 49. Tolling began at midnight Monday.

On November 9, the section that runs from Highway 155 to Highway 31 was opened, expanding the loop from Troup Highway to 31.

TxDOT spokesman Larry Krantz says response to the new stretch of road has been great.

"I think this has probably been the most popular segment that we've opened."

At 70 miles per hour with little traffic, Trevor Hill says it cuts his time to work almost in half, and that's worth a little extra money.

"It was nice. It's smooth, it's clear." he says. "There's no reason why I don't take it."

You can pay the toll by mail or by a TxTag on your windshield.

Customer service representative from TxTag will be at Harvey Hall beginning Tuesday. They can help you get set up with an account if you don't have one already. These TxTags can be used on any toll in Texas. Having one in your windshield could help you save money on the road.

The TxTag rate for the newest segment is now 60 cents with a TxTag and 80 cents without one.

"Having a TxTag will get you the best rate on the tolls in Texas." says Krantz.

Just bring $20 with you to Harvey Convention center to get set up with one.

"The $20 that you pay to activate your tag is actually your first $20 in tolls." says Krantz. "So, there's no additional fee associated with getting a tag."

The final phase of Loop 49 will connect 31 to Interstate 20 next year. That portion of the project belongs to the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority.

"The RMA has said that they're going to cut the ribbon on the segment March 2." says Krantz. "We're certainly behind them and hope they can get it done on that date. We're as anxious to drive it as everybody else."
