TYLER (KYTX) -- A woman out for a walk ended up fighting off a sexual predator Sunday morning. Police said 56-year-old Alvin Jones, a registered sex offender, is the one who tried to hurt her. It happened around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Old Bullard Road and Fair Lane in the Azalea district.

The victim was a woman in her fifties who was walking down the road just before sunrise. Police said Jones came up beside her and struck up a conversation.

"[At that point] a red flag's coming up and she needs to separate herself from him," Tyler Police Officer Don Martin said. "So she says 'well I need to go this way' and he said 'well I'll go this way too.'"

Martin said investigators think Jones was out there looking for a victim, and the woman's attempt at getting away was his excuse to strike.

"He basically took her down to the ground, attempted to drag her into a small little wooded area right there in the neighborhood," Martin said.

Even though he tried to drag her off into a wooded area, police say the victim had at least one thing going for her and that's the fact that there are houses all along the other side of the street. She told police the whole time she was trying to fight him off, she was also screaming as loud as she could. And they say that may have been the reason he finally decided to run off.

"If you're not screaming then really no one knows you're in need of help," Martin said. "And if he's stronger than her then he can maybe take a few blows. The screaming is what he decided 'I can't stay here, I gotta get out of here.'"

"I try to just always stay in an area that's open," Janet Peterson said. "Like I didn't go through the woods back there on that side. I came through the bridge where I'm always visible to people."

Peterson, a regular walker, hadn't heard about the attack. She said it's exactly the reason she walks with her cell phone in her pocket in the middle of the day.

"I'm not surprised," she said. "It is the world we live in. There's just a lot of crazy people out there and that's just something that we have to be aware of. But knowledge is power."

Jones did not get very far. He was arrested about half a mile from where the attack happened.

Martin said he knows not everyone has the option of walking or jogging while the sun is up. He recommended carrying your phone, walking with a buddy, or if you have one, taking your dog with you.

Jones was accused of aggravated rape in 1979 and convicted of sexual assault. Things had been quiet on his record for a while but he got arrested in 2008 for violating parole.

This arrest is another violation of his parole, which removes his option to bond out of jail for the time being.
