Upshur court changes jail meal bidding policy to comply with state statute

Posted: Updated:

GILMER/UPSHUR COUNTY (KYTX) - Upshur County Commissioners in an emergency meeting this afternoon changed how cooks in the Upshur County Jail purchase and schedule meals for the county's more than 140 inmates.

The change puts the county in compliance with state law, County Judge Dean Fowler said.

Commissioners called the emergency meeting after Sheriff Anthony Betterton announced that he might have to send the county's jail inmates to another county. His announcement was in response to County Auditor Janice Tucker, who said the county was not in compliance with state standards on food bids for the jail. Until now, jail cooks prepared a menu for the coming week and would select the cheapest bid from two vendors, Fowler said.

Now, the cooks will prepare their menus two months in advance and get at least three bids from vendors for those menus, the judge said. Commissioners will then consider those bids for final approval.

"It might reduce the (county's) cost, but we'll just have to see," Fowler said. "The most important part is that we follow the statute."
