Update: Tatum police chief speaks out about termination

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE (KYTX) -- Former Tatum Police Chief Tony Almengor, 44, believes there is more to do with his firing than city leaders are letting on. Almengor believes his relationship with his 20-year-old fiancee, who's expecting their first child, is part of it.

"The mayor didn't approve of it. He had a meeting with me and told me to cease my relationship with her, I said I would not," Almengor said.

Almengor claims the other problem was that he asked for compensation for working additional hours. He says he worked an extra 2 hours every day answering dispatch lines, but never received money.

On November 30th, Almengor was put on administrative leave with pay after he says he was reported by another officer for using foul language.

"I made a comment, and the Mayor said I was in violation, and they wanted to fire me," Almengor said.

He also denies he ever slept on the job."I've never been sleeping on the job, and I've never had anyone file a complaint," Almengor said.

Residents like Charlotte Smith, just want to see stability in law enforcement.

"You know it's a small town, but it needs to be run right," Smith said.

TATUM (KYTX) -  In an emergency meeting just before noon today, Tatum City Council members voted to terminate the employment of Tatum Police Chief Tony Almengor. CBS19 was the only new station there at the time, and spoke to Mayor Phil Cory about the decision.

Mayor Cory said while he couldn't disclose many details, the firing involved Almengor's reported unprofessional conduct and behavior. Cory also told CBS19 a number of residents complained about Almengor prior to the termination, which prompted him to look into the allegations.

Police officer April Rains will be taking over Almengor's duties until a new chief is hired.

Cory said Almengor threatened to pursue legal action after being terminated
