(KCEN) -- Family photos are fun but costly, and sometimes tough to schedule, especially if you're a military family.
But a program on Fort Hood called Portraits of Love is making family photos a little easier.
Christina Verdejo and her kids are together for a rare family photo.
"It's just a way to create the memories and have a pictures to show in the house," Verdejo says.
Thanks to the Portraits of Love project and volunteer photographers like Mike Marvins active duty military families are able to get a free photo session for the holidays.
Marvins, a photographer for Woodallen Photography says, "It's just something we feel that we can give to the guys who are serving and their families."
Christina is getting two portraits done. One in memory of her late husband, with a picture of him and his flag case.
"He's actually mooning somebody in this picture but it was the best smile and that's what we remember the most, we remember the smile, that's what we miss."
And another for her growing family.
"It's for my fiance who is overseas right now and hopefully we'll be able to get a picture send to him for Christmas because he won't be here for Christmas this year."
Marvins says last year families were taking portraits for their soldiers overseas but this year the photo sessions are quite different.
"This year a lot of them are home from overseas and we're doing probably 95 percent families which is wonderful."
And that's the type family portrait Christina hopes to take next year.
After the photo session they can see the pictures online and even get complimentary portraits from Shutterfly.
The photographers who are also veterans themselves, travel all the way from Houston every year to take part in Portraits of Love.
