Police: Thieves steal Blue Santa toys from Longview storage unit

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Another year, another Grinch.

Longview police say someone stole about $1,000 worth of toys and other Christmas items donated to police for children in need.

The gifts were part of Longview Police Department's Blue Santa Program, which assists families at Christmas with toys donated by officers and others in the community.

According to Crimes Against Property Sgt. David Hazel, a thief or thieves broke into four storage units at Green Street Warehouse in the 2100 block of Green Street some time between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Police were storing Blue Santa gifts in one of the storage units.

So far, police have no leads, he said. It was the second reported burglary at Green Street Warehouse in the past month, and police are investigating another recent break-in at a storage unit on Gilmer Road. Only the one unit at Green Street had Blue Santa gifts, he said.

"Given that we had four different units that were gone through on this one, we don't know if it was related to any specific knowledge of this charity being stored there," Hazel said.

One year ago, thieves broke in to a storage unit on Jahan Trail near Gilmer Road and stole about $20,000 worth of toys purchased by Child Protective Services that were to be handed out to foster kids. Sarah Marie Corson-Adams, 47, of Gilmer, was sentenced in October to a cumulative 20 years in prison; while Rachel Bradley, 39, of Longview, is scheduled to go to trial Jan. 22 in Gregg County's 124th District Court.
