UPDATE: NACOGDOCHES (KYTX) — Brooks Quinn Jones Elementary school principal Rachel Johnson, 49, passed away this morning.

The 16-year employee of Nacogdoches Independent School District was diagnosed with a serious illness in July.

"This is a very sad day for NISD," said Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes. "Mrs. Johnson was a very good leader in education, but most of all she was a very good person. She had a positive impact on the children of NISD and will be greatly missed."

The district is offering additional counseling to BQJ students and staff, and working with Stephen F. Austin State University to secure its assistance, as the campus copes with the loss.

With the funeral service plans pending, "We are in support mode right now for Mrs. Johnson's family," Hayes said. "Once we know their plans, we will decide how to handle the services as a district."

Since November, Janis Compton has served as interim principal of the campus. Hayes said Compton most likely will continue in that capacity for the remainder of the school year.
