Children Are A Gift: Shawn

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - Shawn is very friendly and a joy to be around. "He is a very sweet, intelligent child. He has a neat personality and doesn't meet a stranger, very talkative," said Ashley Gipson, with the Department of Family and Protective Services.

This 16-year-old makes friends easily. "I'm always happy," he said.

Shawn has a natural curiosity and enjoys asking questions and learning new things. I asked him to tell me about school. "It's good," he said. "Art is my favorite subject."

Shawn has spent four years in foster care and says it's been hard. "I've been going from home to home. I've been missing my family. I never knew my dad or mom."

This teenager needs frequent encouragement and lots of one-on-one attention to build his self esteem.

Gipson said, "He's ready to be adopted. He hopes when anybody sees this taping, he'll find his forever family."

Shawn needs a family committed to helping with his special needs. He is considered legally blind and is diagnosed with Usher Syndrome and V.A.T.E.R. Syndrome, a term used for multiple genetic abnormalities.

He gets along well with others and would like siblings. "Someone he can look up to and be a roll model," said Gipson.

I asked him, "What do you think you'll bring to that family?" He quickly replied, "Love!" And he's hoping for a lot of love in return.
