MANSFIELD (CBSDFW.COM) - A two-year-old girl is in the hospital after the family's pit bull attacked her in Mansfield on Monday evening.

The girl was transferred to Cook Children's Hospital by air ambulance due to the severity of her injuries.

The Mansfield Fire Department was dispatched to the 1100 block of Glen Creek Drive at 5:30 p.m. After arriving, police were called in to assist.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the little girl had been bitten, along with a 26-year-old male. The man was treated at the scene.

"We went ahead and contacted animal control to come out and investigate and take custody of the dog," said Officer Thad Penkala of the Mansfield Police Department.

Authorities took the dog to an animal shelter where it is now in quarantine.

The incident is being investigated by the Mansfield Police and Mansfield Animal Control. Police are not sure what sparked the attack.

It is unclear as to the extent of the girl's injuries.
