Longview police: Speed-related wrecks up 22 percent since June

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Speed-related crashes have increased at least ten percent every month for the past four months in Longview.

Police are saying there's really no good reason to speed.

Twenty-nine-year-old Kirby Hewett understands how dangerous speeding can be.

"I've seen people flying by me speeding and we end up at the same place at nearly the same time, so I've learned over the years that it's just not worth it," Hewett said.

Even so, Hewett ended up at Longview municipal court Tuesday. He rear-ended another driver recently on Loop 281 when he couldn't slow down soon enough.

"I wasn't exceeding the speed limit, but my failure to control speed resulted in a collision," Hewett said.

Police can't pinpoint a cause. But they know that between June and October, speed-related crashes in Longview jumped more than 22 percent. And the speeding continued into November.

Police say speed played a role in a November 7th wreck on Airline Road that killed a Longview High School student.

"Speed is a big factor in many accidents," Brian said. "Unfortunately, a lot of people do drive above the posted speed limit."

And with safety, Hewett says there are other benefits to slowing down.

"Especially with gas prices, a difference of five or ten miles under the speed limit greatly reduces your miles per gallon on the fuel intake, plus, it's just not worth it. It doesn't buy you enough time, really," he said.

The National Safety Council says speed factors into one in three wrecks reported in the U.S., resulting in about 13,000 deaths a year.

"We certainly encourage officers to work speed. We have radar, all of our cars are equipped with radar units to work speed enforcement," Brian said.

A speeding citation can cost you hundreds of dollars, but as police say, no amount of money replaces life or injury, so they ask you to slow down on East Texas and Longview roadways.
