City launches updated web site

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) – The City of Tyler has launched an updated version of their web site at http://www.cityoftyler.org/  The new site enhances transparency through the addition of community engagement features and improved navigation.

"Transparency in local government is our priority," said Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass.  "Our web site is an integral part of our overall communication strategy and is critical to making information available to our citizens.  It has been several years since the site was updated and I am very pleased with the result."

The design of the city web site, which receives more than 107,000 visits per month, was last updated in 2008.  In April 2012, the City Communications Department began the process of revamping the site by conducting a survey to get feedback from citizens about the existing site.  The feedback indicated that more could be done to help citizens find information on the site, particularly contact information for specific departments.  Improved navigation and an updated appearance were also cited as opportunities for improvement.

"As part of our redesign, we incorporated new features that would provide our residents with additional ways of reporting issues and providing input about the subjects that affect them most,' said City Manager Mark McDaniel.  "Two new programs were added to the site: Tyler Speaks and Click4Service."

Tyler Speaks is an online forum for civic engagement. Users may read what others are saying about important Tyler topics, and then post their own statements. City officials will read the statements and incorporate them into their decision process.  The first discussion topic, off-site estate and garage sale signs, has been posted and residents may post their opinions on the page after registering.

"Tyler Speaks is just one more way that residents can share their opinions with the City," said External Relations Director Susan Guthrie.  "Many of the questions that we post on this part of our web site will eventually help form policy decisions."

Also new to the site is Click4Service, which provides residents the opportunity to report issues and track their status online.

Other features of the new site include:

  • An enhanced content management software system to simplify the process of updating web content;
  • Links to all the City social media pages;
  • A tab dedicated to financial transparency – including budgets and weekly check registers;
  • An updated appearance that reflects the community brand; and
  • Updated navigation to make it easier to find items of interest.

The site is also designed to be more mobile friendly, with a corresponding mobile app to be launched shortly.

Many features from the previous site were carried over, including Click2Gov that allows for online water bill and Municipal Court payments (go to "I want to"), and the events calendar.

The City's web site is designed by NetStrategies and Management, Inc.
