Rainbow trout season in Tyler

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - The cold weather is here, and that means rainbow trout is in season. Thursday, Texas Parks and Wildlife stocked Tyler lakes with thousands of the fish for the Winter.

"We're fishin' for the rainbow trout."

"Perfect fishing weather right now."

Richard Ott with Texas Parks and Wildlife says rainbow trout survive best in waters less than 65 degrees. At 53 degrees Thursday morning, the water was perfect for the fish.

"This cold front that came through Sunday has dropped the water temperatures to where we're in the prime zone now."

This year, more than 5,000 rainbow trout were hauled into the Rose City from a hatchery in Missouri.

The Winter Rainbow Trout Program is a cooperative effort between Tyler's Parks and Recreation Department and Texas Parks and Wildlife.

With thousands of rainbow trout now swimming at Faulkner Park, and at Woldert Park, and Tyler State park, that means a lot of Winter fishing for East Texas families.

The Hall family got a head start this morning.

"So far, I've seen a lot of fish poppin' out."

And, 10-year-old Rachel Hall knows what she's doing.

"Well, first you have to reel it in. You have to play with it a little bit so it catches in the fish's mouth, and you don't lose your bait. And then, you have to reel it in." she says.

You can reel in up to five fish per day, and Ott says there is no required minimum length on the trout.

"You can keep on coming out bring the whole family. So, if you've got three kids and two parents, that's 25 fish per day." he says.

And the best part, says Hall... "I like when you eat the fish."

Everyone 17 and older needs a fishing license to fish at Faulkner and Woldert Parks. You can get them for about $30 at sporting goods stores or just about anywhere that sells bait and tackle.

You don't have to have a license to fish at Tyler State Park.
