Tyler Police Chief Gary Swindle talks about shooting

Posted: Updated:

Kenneth Dean with our news partner the Tyler Morning Telegraph spoke with local police about their training to prepare for such incidents.

TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH (KYTX) - What is the main objective for police in the event something like this was to happen in Tyler?

Tyler Police Chief Gary Swindle told me a lot of lessons were learned from the 1999 Columbine Colo shooting but the main lesson was to not wait to enter the building.

Can you explain what the chief means?

Simply he said the first responding officers are instructed to make entry to the school to begin searching for the shooter. He said to wait is allowing a shooter to take innocent victims.

How often do they train for such scenarios?

They train several times each year and during the summer they actually use the schools to practice their maneuvers  so they can get a feel of the buildings. Chief Swindle said they attend classes throughout the year and the training includes officers with TJC and UT Tyler.

For more on how Tyler police train for tragedies such as this see Kenneth's story in tomorrow's Tyler Morning Telegraph.
