CLEAT: Fired Longview officer to appeal city by Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Fired Longview police officer Leigh Ann Snyder will file an appeal with the City of Longview either today or Tuesday, a spokesman for the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas (CLEAT) said this morning.

Snyder is appealing the city's Dec. 11 decision to terminate her employment, because she failed to return to active full-time duty after suffering an on-the-job injury one year ago. Snyder suffered several broke bones in Dec. 11, 2011, wreck on West Loop 281 in which she was responding to a business alarm call and was hit by an alleged drunk driver. The officer returned to some light duty work for Longview Police Department and said she was making a full recovery, but city administrators said the employee policy led them to terminate her employment because she did not return to full duty.

CLEAT Public Affairs Director Charley Wilkison said by phone this morning that Snyder's appeal to the city is a necessary step before taking state or federal legal action. Wilkison expects the city to reject Snyder's appeal, and Snyder will then file a lawsuit in either state or federal court, if not both courts, Wilkison said.

"We want to do the very best to exhaust every remedy," he said.
