East Texas school districts remembering CT victims; talking to students

Posted: Updated:

((KYTX)) - Schools in East Texas are still processing Friday's shooting, and paying their respects.

"My heart goes out to them, they're in my prayers and I thank God I don't have to deal with it," Superintendent Mike Payne, from Carlisle ISD in Price, said.

Payne says he's had calls from parents following the incident and is letting them know safety will continue to be a top priority. "You'll see an increased police presence in our area. The Rusk County sheriff's department is going to be more visible," Payne said.

All Saints Episcopal School in Tyler sent an email to parents, staff, and faculty to help guide adults.

"It suggested that you remain calm and reassuring to your children, that you listen to them and empathize with them," Scharlanne Crozier, Communications Director at All Saints, said.

Teachers are also prepared to answer questions from students, especially those at the elementary level.

"If it comes up in their classrooms, they'll address it in a professional manner and in a caring manner," Payne said.

As difficult as that can be, Tammy Ellison is a mom that thinks it's important. "I think a lot of parents are scared to speak up," Ellison said.

She has a 6-year-old son, and says the story hit close to home for her. She set up a memorial at Carlisle Elementary.

"My heart was broken from the moment I found out about this," Ellison said.

A prayer vigil is being held tomorrow evening, Tuesday, at Carlisle Elementary at 7 p.m. for anyone wanting to pay their respects.
