Health Alert: Holiday over eating has deadly consequences

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Most of us tend to over-indulge during the holidays, and now a study shows exactly how much that can cost you. According to the article in the British medical journal, each day of smoking, indulging in a couple of drinks, eating red meat and watching TV can take 30 minutes off life expectancy. Luckily each day of healthier habits can reverse that trend.

(CBS) - The number of teens who undergo weight loss surgery has leveled off in the past decade. Bariatric surgery jumped in popularity in early 2000, but researchers in Washington found that since 2003, the number of procedures now stands at about 1000 a year. It's believed patients are going for less invasive procedures. About a third of all children in the U.S. are overweight or obese.

(CBS) - Radio waves may be an effective way to control high blood pressure. A new study published in the journal Circulation looked at patients who were not responding to medication. Researchers found that directing radio waves at the nerves around the kidneys lowered blood pressure for at least six months. More than 78 million Americans battle high blood pressure, which increases your risk for heart attack and stroke.
