Man nabbed in woods after fleeing Van Zandt officials in stolen truck

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - Van Zandt County officials arrested a man Monday who fled officers in a stolen truck, after he fled into the woods near CR 1313.

Another man in the vehicle evading arrest, but he has been identified, according to a press release.

About 2 p.m. Monday, investigators with the Van Zandt County Sheriff's office assisted Prec. No. 1 Constable Mickey Henson along with the Grand Saline Police Department to execute a felony warrant at a location on CR 1313.

The wanted suspect had just arrived at the location in a Ford truck. Upon arrival to the location, authorities observed two people inside the truck. The occupants of the truck spotted authorities and quickly fled the scene southeast from the residence and down a narrow wooded trail. Due to the rough terrain, authorities had to continue the search on foot and attempt to locate the vehicle. The vehicle was located where it had run through the woods, over a fence and was abandoned. It was confirmed the vehicle was stolen from Dallas.

Investigator Burns set up a command post and requested responding units to set up a perimeter. DPS helicopter, Canton Air 1 Helicopter along with Canton Police K9 unit responded to the scene and a search for the suspects began. Authorities were advised that the wanted subject Jimmy Don Thompson had recently made threats to kill law enforcement to keep from going back to prison and was considered armed and dangerous.

Later, Intel reported that Thompson was hiding in a barn nearby the scene and was requesting a ride. Authorities surrounded and searched several barns but could not locate him. It was later determined that the suspect had been receiving information through his cell phone from an unknown source that was providing the whereabouts of law enforcement by monitoring a police scanner.

Burns called off the helicopters, contacted dispatch over the radio that the man hunt was terminated and all units would be clear. Shortly after, Intel provided that Thompson had received information that the search was terminated and he needed a ride.

Units devised a plan to apprehend Thompson by utilizing a family member's vehicle. Units approached Thompson's location in the vehicle and lured him to walk towards it. As Thompson approached the vehicle, officers rushed out of the vehicle. Thompson was tased and placed into custody.

Thompson was booked in the Van Zandt County jail for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle pending arraignment. He will be facing evading arrest charges at a later date. The other suspect is still at large but has been identified, and felony warrants will be issued for that person's arrest.

"Every agency came together and as a team and was utilized to execute a strategy that ended up apprehending this wanted fugitive. We would like to thank the Grand Saline Police Department, Department of Public Safety, Canton Police Department, Van Zandt County District Attorney's Office, Constables and deputies for all their hard work and willingness to work together," said Investigator Jason Burns, Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office.
