75-foot boat runs aground on Sabine jetties, 2 injured

Posted: Updated:

(KBMT) - The U.S. Coast Guard has informed 12 News that a 75-foot boat has grounded in the Sabine Jetties.  The grounding happened before sunrise on the Texas Side of the Jetties.

Two people were injured in the incident.  Their injuries are considered non life-threatening.

As a precaution, the Coast Guard is keeping all others on the water at least 100 yards away from the grounding.

The Coast Guard Tuesday issued the following news release:

Port Arthur, Texas (December 18, 2012) - At 3:38 a.m., the 75-foot long motor vessel Sabine Pilot II reported grounding on the Texas side of the Sabine Jetties. Coast Guard Station Sabine dispatched a fast-response rescue boat to assist on-scene. Three people were onboard at the time of the incident, two of whom reportedly suffered non-life threatening injuries requiring a trip to the hospital.

An initial damage survey indicates the Sabine Pilot II is resting stable atop the rocks without any indication of damage done to the vessel's fuel or oil tanks. "Currently there are no indications of pollution and a salvage barge is already on site to evaluate the best option for retrieval", stated CAPT Joe Paitl, Commanding Officer of Marine Safety Unit Port Arthur.

The Incident Command System has been activated to provide effective Coast Guard oversight of the salvage operation and to ensure safety. According to CAPT Paitl, "Any operation on the water demands focus and maximum emphasis on safety throughout the evolution; that's our goal, a swift vessel recovery without pollution or injuries".

The U.S. Coast Guard is enforcing a 100-yard safety zone around the vessel's location and a Safety Broadcast Notice to Mariners is in effect to alert transiting mariners. The Sabine Pilot II is a Pilot boat most commonly used to ferry Pilots to and from deep draft ships.
