BBB warns about money scam in shooting tragedy

Posted: Updated:

TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH (KYTX) - The Better Business Bureau tonight is warning residents who want to send money in response to the Connecticut school shootings to be careful.

After tragedies, bogus groups often pop up to take advantage of our desire to help others.

Danny Mogle from our news partners at the Tyler paper joins us with this consumer alert.

Danny how can we make sure a charitable group is legitimate?

The BBB says we have to do our homework.

When in doubt, stick with groups that we all know and trust such as the Red Cross or Salvation Army.

If the group has a funny name, seems to be brand new or is one no one has ever heard of that could be a big red flag.

The BBB can help you determine which groups are legitimate.

What questions should we be asking?

Ask specifically how the money will be used, where the money will be spent and how quickly the money will be spent.

If you don't get an answer or hear something vague such as, we will decide later or on a "as need basis".

Also if an independent agency audits their spending.  Legitimate ones do.

If you don't like the answer you are hearing. Don't donate with them.
