Raising a child with Asperger's Syndrome

Posted: Updated:

(kYTX) - Tyler psychologist, Dr.Wilson Renfroe, is the parent of an adult son with Asperger's syndrome.

"They get made fun of easily and they get singled as the weird kid," said Dr. Renfroe.

Asperger's is a "high functioning" form of autism. Those with the disability want to fit in with everyone else, but their brains don't allow them to.

"It is as if they don't understand things. It's not that they can't hear them, they just have problems processing that information. Sometimes it's as if we're speaking to them in a different language," said Dr. Renfroe.

Experts say those with autism are not inclined to commit violent acts. In fact, if you ask some parents, it's the complete opposite.

"As a matter of fact, I think they're overboard with their compassion. They're very in tune with the pain of others," said Cindi DeWet.

Cindi DeWet has an adopted and biological son with the disorder.

"They try very hard to connect and it's very frustrating for them when they can't," said DeWet.

Those who suffer from Asperger's sometimes want social relationship with others, while some don't want to be bothered at all.

"Sometimes they don't care about social relationships, they don't care if they have friends, they tend to be loners. They tend to do things by themselves. People bother them," said Dr.Renfroe.

But, experts and parents will both tell you violence is not in their chemical makeup. Just as they all agree that there must have been something else going on in the mind of Adam Lanza to cause the tragedy in Newtown.

"They're generally not as premeditated as that appeared to be. They're more reactive to things around them in the moment," said Dr. Renfroe.
