SMITH COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A Smith County jury convicted a former Smith County jailer Thursday of having consensual sex with an inmate.

The same jury then sentenced Lakerry Devonerich Bowie, 28, of Tyler to two years of probation for the charge of violating the civil rights of a person in custody, a state jail felony, prosecutor Jason Parrish said. Bowie waived his rights to an appeal, Parrish said.

He was arrested in March after an investigation by Texas Ranger Brent Davis.

Davis began working the case in September 2011 after contacted by the sheriff's office in reference to Bowie allegedly having sexual contact with a female inmate.

Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith said at the time that Bowie had been terminated from the department for failing to comply with policy concerning internal investigations.
