Update: 2 tornadoes verified near Trinity-Houston County line

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE (12/27/12) - The National Weather Service confirmed Thursday that two separate tornadoes were responsible for Tuesday's damage in the Pennington area along the Trinity-Houstin County line. The NWS said one tornado was an EF0, which contained winds between 65 and 85 m.p.h. and the other was an EF3, which contained winds between 136 and 165 m.p.h.

The NWS said damage in the Lovelady area of Houston County did not appear to be the result of tornado, meaning straight-line winds were likely to blame.

UPDATE (12/26/12) - Investigators with the National Weather Service were on the ground in Trinity and Houston counties late Wednesday morning to make a determination as to whether or not it was a tornado that hit on Christmas day. We'll update this story with their findings as soon as they become available.

NEAR CROCKETT (KYTX) - People in Houston and Trinity counties woke up to more than just presents under their tree this morning. Some of them are dealing with serious storm damage.

Jaime that's the general consensus.

Lovelady and Pennington are two small, quiet towns south of Crockett.

And both of them have a mess to clean up on this Christmas night

Elizabeth Haley and her husband hid in the bathtub after hearing the tornado warning on the radio.

They tell us they got there with just seconds to spare and it was over just as quick as it had started.

All this stuff on their property is from the Lovelady State Bank next door.

A roof, a decorative railing and a car port all got lifted up and set back down about 50 yards away.

About 25 miles away in Pennington a storm ripped an entire feed store up off its foundation and smashed it all over the highway in front of it.

That also left several thousand people in that part of the county without power.

The National Weather Service will determined if two tornadoes touched down in Texas on Christmas Day, according to reports.

National Weather Service meteorologist Greg Carbin says a tornado has been reported in Trinity County and another in Houston County. He says it appears only one building was damaged in the East Texas city of Crockett in Houston County.

Authorities said a powerful storm toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver.

Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Thomas Gilliland says the tree fell onto the truck about 9:40 a.m. Tuesday.

He said the man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

The tree was toppled by a storm system that was forecast to bring thunderstorms and tornadoes across the region. Thousands of residents were left without power.

Parts of North Texas, including Dallas and Fort Worth, could get snow later Tuesday.
