Beer hits the shelves in Tyler

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Some people thought they would never see the day you could buy alcohol in Tyler, but tonight, it's on shelves in many stores.

The oh's and ah's took over the isles as beer was unloaded and set up in coolers this afternoon, and it was definitely the buzz on Facebook.

But voters said yes to prop two in the November election, and it took about 6 weeks to get those permits in hand.

No sooner had the plastic come off, and the carts rolled out to the isles...

"I had to pick up my beer out of cases not even open yet, still on the floor, but it was there so I got it," Bryce was pleasantly surprised FRESH by Brookshire's was selling beer Friday afternoon.

"Blue Moon, Hoegarten," says Bryce.

"I didn't know it was out today, but happened to see it out, use that as an excuse to come on out and get groceries too," says Amber Foster who walked away with a 6-pack of Blue Moon.

Where shelves were empty Friday, workers will stock more than 1,000 different types of wine starting Saturday, and there will be more than 500 different kinds of domestic, craft and IPA beers.

If you buy a 6-pack of beer or a bottle of wine at FRESH, you have to use the registers at the front of the store.

A separate area from the restaurant section of FRESH, which has a separate license for alcohol sales.

But for those who just want to have a drink at home, it's more of a convenience.

"If I had to, I'd still drive, but it's just so convenient they have it right here with the groceries and everything else. I really liked it," says Bryce.

Wine will start to be delivered tomorrow for those of you looking for a bottle.

But it won't make it to all of the stores until later next week.

Proposition two was voted on for both the city of Tyler and precinct two to allow the sale of alcohol for off premise consumption.

It was a vote that came up in years past for precinct two and failed.
