TYLER (KYTX) - Major U.S. stores are recalling a popular baby recliner after reports of five deaths linked to the device.
150,000 Nap Nanny recliners have been recalled, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Several Tyler moms have some different opinions about the product, and the recall.
Hannah Davidson has had a Nap Nanny since her daughter Gwenyth was born four months ago.
:I bought it so she could sleep in it," Davidson said. "She had acid reflux so it was supposed to help with that and it's supposed to make them sleep longer."
The Nap Nanny founder says her product has helped thousands of babies who need to sleep in a more upright position.
However, according to a recent CPSC recall, there have been 92 reports of infants hanging or falling out of the nap nanny even when the harness is used. There have also been five reported deaths when using the device.
Davidson says she hasn't had one problem with the product.
"I love it. I still use it," she said. Now, she doesn't let Gwenyth sleep in it, but Davidson says it's a good product. She heard about the recalls about a month ago.
"I wasn't too scared because most of the injuries happened when they were using it not as instructed. I always use it as it says and I never leave her alone in it," she said.
Martha Schulz almost bought the Nap Nanny when her daughter Scarlett was born.
"The recliner would help her with any gastric reflux that sometimes babies suffer," Schulz said.
However, after news of the dozens of complaints and 5 deaths, she decided against it.
"That is a lot of cases!" she said.
Schulz says she's very particular about the products she buys. She only buys products that are certified by the safety commission JPMA. The commission offers a web site parents can go to and see a list of approved devices.
She says regardless of what the device parents choose to buy, they should always read directions carefully, and supervise when their child is using it.
The Nap Nanny company has closed down because the four main companies that carry the product refuse to sell it.
The company's owner still stands by the product saying the latest version is safe, and it's a shame that parents will lose such a helpful product.
