Health Alert: Recess vital to child development

(CBS) - A group of doctors is stressing the importance of recess. The American Academy of Pediatrics says the daily break is vital to a child's cognitive, physical and social development. Doctors say recess should never be withheld as a punishment. The study authors also write a lack of play can lead to poor health and lower grades.

 


 

 (CBS) - The American Academy of Pediatrics says every school should have a nurse and every district should have a physician, and not just for emergencies. The group says doctors and nurses can promote better nutrition and physical activity in schools. They can also help students manage chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes.

 


 

 (CBS) - Millions of smokers are making the new year's resolution to kick the habit. But the Centers for Disease Control estimates less than 10 percent will be successful. Doctors say it takes a smoker five or six tries before they stop for good.
