Longview man caught hunting near church with stolen gun

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - A 47-year-old Longview man is jailed Sunday after an off-duty police officer finds him hunting behind a church with several guns including a stolen firearm.

According to Longview police spokeswoman Kristie Brian, the off-duty officer noticed someone in a truck in a parking lot behind Calvary Tabernacle, at 301 E. Hawkins Parkway. The man, later identified as Rodney Dan Lemay, had several guns, ammunition, binoculars and other hunting gear and appeared to be hunting in the wooded area behind the church.

Police contacted a state game warden to investigate. During the investigation, it was discovered that one of Lemay's guns was reported stolen, Brian said.

Lemay was released from the Gregg County Jail today on a surety bond.
