Longview man jailed for trying to take officer's weapon

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - A 24-year-old Longview man is behind bars after police say he lied about his identity then tried to take an officer's weapon during an arrest.

According to court records, Longview police stopped a vehicle driven by Eric Joseph Harroff on West Marshall Avenue at South Ward Street at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday for having an expired registration. During the traffic stop, Harroff identified himself to officers with an incorrect last name and birth year, but officers soon learned his true identity through records from his employer, according to police.

Harroff had a city traffic warrant, and when officers tried to arrest him for giving false identifying information, he began to struggle with officers, records showed. During the confrontation, Harroff kicked and swung his arms at police and tried to take one officer's Taser weapon, police said. Harroff was finally subdued and taken to the Gregg County Jail.

He remains in jail on $21,500 bond today, charged with assault of a public servant, resisting arrest, attempt to take a weapon from an officer and failure to identify a fugitive from justice by giving false information.
