Jacksonville may be closer to civic center decision

Posted: Updated:

TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH (KYTX) - The City of Jacksonville may be closer to deciding whether it will build a new and much larger civic center.

A committee studying the matter will be making its recommendations to the council within weeks.

Danny Mogle from our news partners at the Tyler paper has the update.

Danny if the city decides to go forward, how much would the project cost.

Those on the committee told us they believe the city can build a nice multi-purpose events center for around $3 million dollars.

And if they keep it in this price range they could build it without any type of tax rate increase.

A lot of cities own and operate civic centers.

These facilities are not only used for civic functions but they are also rented out for conventions and trade shows and as performance venues.

And all of those things generate income for the city and attract tourists and the tourism dollar.

Has Jacksonville considered a possible location for a new center.

Nothing has been nailed down, but city officials have been looking at potential sites in the area around Nichols Green Park.

To find out what the mayor of Jacksonville had to say, see Kelly's Gooch's story in Thursday's newspaper.
