Health Alert: Low wages linked to hypertension

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new study shows a dramatic connection between low wages and high blood pressure. Researchers in California found the lower pay, the greater the risk of hypertension. The link was especially strong for women and younger workers. Hypertension affects about one in three American adults.

(CBS) - More women are following the government's guidelines for cervical cancer screening. A study from the Centers for Disease Control and prevention found fewer women under the age of 21 are getting pap tests and more women between the ages of 21 and 65 are getting them only once every three years. That's in line with current recommendations. The study also found fewer women who have had a hysterectomy are getting pap tests, but that number is still too high, about 60 percent.

(CBS) - Around four percent of American adults say they fell asleep behind the wheel at least once in the last month. The CDC study found drowsy driving was more common in men and among people who got less than six hours of sleep at night. Drowsy driving causes thousands of crashes each year. The CDC says if drivers start to doze they should get off the road and rest.
