Bullard stores ready to sell alcohol

Posted: Updated:
BULLARD (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Alcohol is beginning to pop up in Bullard nearly a month after the city council adopted a set of ordinances regulating sales.
The ordinances came as a result of two alcohol propositions inside Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 that voters passed overwhelmingly Nov. 6.

Bullard City Secretary Doris Crockett has said the entirety of the Smith County side of the city resides in Precinct 2, so the new ordinances would not affect properties in Cherokee County.

The propositions allow for the sale of beer and wine products for off-premise consumption in gas stations and grocery stores and allows for the sale of mixed beverages in restaurants without having the designation of a private club.

Several locations have applied for city permits since ordinances were adopted in Bullard. They are Brookshire's on U.S. Highway 69, an Exxon convenience store on U.S. Highway 69 near Sonic and the EZ Way convenience store at Farm-to-Market roads 2493 and 344, across the street from city hall.

Rebecca Sanders, director of public relations for Brookshire Grocery Co., said the Bullard Brookshire's was one of the final Brookshire's stores in Smith County to get alcohol after the November election. The Bullard store received alcohol on Friday.

Ms. Sanders said all stores have at least beer, but sometimes it can take longer to get wine. She said a variety of products is available in each store that is allowed to sell alcohol, but the selection and quantity of alcohol available is based on the size of each store.

For instance, Ms. Sanders said FRESH by Brookshire's on Old Jacksonville Highway has an expanded variety of craft beers and a larger selection of wines. Shoppers at FRESH can purchase single-serve alcoholic beverages for on-site consumption limited to the coffee, gelato and patio areas, she said.

Salman Saleem, owner of the EZ Way convenience store at Farm-to-Market roads 2493 and 344, said his store likely will get alcohol at the end of this month.

He said families with children might hesitate to come in the store with alcohol there, but he expects it to bring in more business overall.

The Exxon convenience store near Sonic is still waiting on appropriate licensing.

Mayor Pam Frederick said even with the three Bullard locations that applied, she doesn't anticipate a big effect on the community because Bullard is close to other cities that sell alcohol as well.

However, she said the city will wait and see if it has an impact on sales tax.

"Some might go to the store (to buy alcohol) and spend more on other groceries. We might see extra revenue, but I don't think it'll be a huge change in the economy of Bullard or its persona ..." Mayor Frederick said. "We were proactive to make sure we have ordinances that protect (Bullard's) look in case a new establishment wanted to come in."
