MOUNT PLEASANT/TITUS COUNTY (KYTX) - A former state social worker has been charged with identity theft, after investigators say she used personal identification from Texas Department of Health and Human Services clients to obtain credit cards.

Selena Patino, 38, of Mount Pleasant, is charged with second degree felony fraudulent use or possession of identifying information, and state jail felony credit card abuse. According to a Titus County Sheriff's Office press release, Patino assumed the identity of clients who received state immunizations or other services at the Health and Human Services Office in Mount Pleasant. She would use personal information to get credit cards online, and once approved, she would max out the cards with purchases.

Sheriff's investigators say many of the items she purchased were found at her home on FM 1735 when investigators arrived Friday with search and arrest warrants.

The Titus County Sheriff's Office said it received "multiple identity theft-related complaints from citizens" last week. According to its press release, investigators were led to Patino.

The sheriff's office said the list of people whose identification was stolen by Patino "is still growing and we believe it to be in the hundreds." It is asking people who have used to Mount Pleasant office of the Texas Department of Health and Human Services over the past few months to check their credit reports.

"We are going to contact the Texas Department of Health with a list of clients that we know had their identity compromised, and you should expect the Texas Department of Health to contact you," the press release showed.

Patino was arrested Friday, but was released from the Titus County Jail on $31,000 bond Saturday, according to the Mount Pleasant Daily Tribune.
