TYLER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A Tyler business owner, on Monday, announced his candidacy for the District 6 city council seat being vacated by City Councilman Jason Wright.

John Nix, 33, a Lubbock native who has lived in Tyler since 2001, will run for the seat during the city council election in May. He has owned his company, Nix Construction, in Tyler, since 2001, when he and his father, Steve Nix, relocated here from Lubbock.

Nix said in a news release that he is excited about the opportunity to serve the city in a larger capacity.

"The city of Tyler has excellent leadership headed in a positive direction that will continue to strengthen our city, and I am running to encourage our current direction," he said in a statement.

The candidate has been a commissioner on the city's planning and zoning commission since 2010, along with other commissions and committees, including the city of Tyler code review committee, according to his news release.
Nix has served in various positions for the nonprofit Leadership Tyler organization, as a volunteer contractor for the Tyler Main Street Art Gallery and as a volunteer with Grace Community Church.

He said he believes that his business experience in the service industry has given him the ability to help people from all sectors of the community understand each other and cooperate, Nix said in his release.

"I believe the city government should be managed like a business, and that we should not spend money we don't have," he said in his prepared statement.

Nix married Stori Hadden, a native Tylerite, in 2005, and they are expecting their first child in July.

Both Nix and his wife are active members of Grace Community Church.
