Texas Rangers investigating TASER death

Posted: Updated:

SHREVEPORT (KTBS) - A Marshall man is dead after being tased by police. It happened Friday night near East Houston and Scoggins Street in Marshall. Marcus Dewayne Slade would have been 33 years old on January 7th, but on Friday night, officers say they were called out to East Houston and Scoggins because Slade was naked and walking down the street.

"Kryptonite, kryptonite. He was hollering and screaming it and i didn't have the vaguest idea of what that meant," said Vickie Hartsell who lives in the area.

Officers say Slade was arrested after a fight with police where they had to tase him to get him under control. Slade was then taken to Harrison County jail just a few blocks away.  Minutes later an ambulance was called to the jail because Slade was unresponsive. Soon after, officials declared him dead.

Hartsell says, she was shocked to hear of Slade's death. "We did hear a tase from the police. I think we actually saw him being put on the ground and it wasn't anything abnormal, it was like it should have been. In that case, they wouldn't have known what to do with him. I thought my word... I don't know. I didn't know what to think. Maybe it was something he was on and maybe that had factored with it. I don't have a clue."

Opinions differ whether officers did the right thing by tasing Slade. Hartsell says, it's a sad situation all the way around but from what she saw, the police didn't use extreme force. "The police put their lives on the line everyday for everybody and they're just dealing with the situation at the time. It's a one minute reaction, and i think they acted like they should've."

Officers arrested Slade for Disorderly Conduct, Assault on an Officer and Resisting Arrest.
