Health Alert: Blood pressure drugs could fight cancer

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Patients with lung cancer may survive longer if they take drugs for high blood pressure or heart disease. Researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center looked at 722 patients with lung cancer and found patients taking beta blockers lived 22 percent longer than other patients. Doctors believe beta blockers may interfere with the receptors on cells and help keep the cancer from spreading.

(CBS) - A new study links sweetened drinks, especially diet soda, to depression. Researchers for the National Institutes of Health looked at about 270,000 people and those who drank more than four cups of soda a day were 30 percent more likely to develop depression. Scientists say coffee seems to have the opposite of effect. People who drank four cups a day were about 10 percent less likely to have depression.

(CBS) - Osteoarthritis patients with knee pain probably won't get any relief if they're taking vitamin D. Researchers looked at 146 people with the common disorder and found vitamin D supplements did not make any significant difference in pain or in loss of cartilage.
