2012 hottest year on record in U.S.

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - 2012 ended up being the hottest year on record in the United States.

The average temperature rose to 55 degrees -- that's a full degree warmer than the previous record set in 1998. Normally records bump up about a tenth of a degree. Meteorologists say having the record go up a full degree is considered a big jump.

Scientists believe global warming and natural weather variations are to blame for the higher temperatures.
