Fire department gets pet oxygen masks

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - With the help of compassionate pet owners, The Longview Fire Department has a new animal control kit for every front line engine and truck.

Now every fire department in Gregg County is equipped to help pets in emergency situations.

"Thanks to some generous donations of citizens in the area, we now have pet masks designed to give oxygen to pets."

The idea to invest in the animal oxygen masks came from concerned Longview resident...

"A question was asked, do we have the mask, and if we don't why not."

That's when animal control officer jacqui lynch got involved.

"I thought hmmmm, we can actually get these donated."

So members of the Longview Animal Control took it upon themselves to coordinate the purchase of 16 kits at 75 each.

These pet masks work similar to oxygen masks used on humans, which is why in the past, Longview firefighters were using them on animals.

"In the past we did not have this specific device, so we had to modify the human mask to fit the pet, which may not be as effective as the actual pet mask."

"These are better for the animals because they're actually made to fit around the muzzles of the animals."

SPECIALLY MADE FOR DOGS AND CATS -- TO PROVIDE BETTER OXYGEN FLOW IN AN EMERGENCY OR LIFE THREATENING SITUATION.

"If we have a fire and the pet becomes overcome by the smoke, it gives us a better ability to rescue that animal with oxygen administration."

Lynch says one thing people tend to forget...

"As people get smoke inhalations, so do the animals."

But with a pet oxygen mask kit on every front line engine and truck in Gregg County pet owners can have a little peace of mind.

"For pet owners it just shows we had a need, it was met by the public and we're now going to be able to offer a high level of service for our four legged friends."
