Local schools fight the flu outbreak

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- 41 states are experiencing intense flu outbreaks, and it's 5 weeks earlier than usual.

"Right before the holidays we had a little higher incident with some of the fever and some of the cough and sore throats," Nancy Jones, Coordinator of Health Services at TISD, said.

Tyler ISD is doing what it can, diligently cleaning door knobs, water foundations, and asking teachers to look for signs.

"They see these children every day, and they are real good about sending them to the nurse to be checked if something is wrong," Jones said.

Some teachers are taking the time to remind kids about good hygiene.

"We're all coming back from the Christmas holiday and everybody's bringing back their germs from their house, and so we want to remind the kids again to get in the habit of washing their hands," Sandi Martin, a PE teacher at Richardson ISD, said.

Health professionals are encouraging parents to also teach coughing etiquette and not sharing drinks in the cafeteria.
