Clintonville’s Crimson Cup Coffee House is kicking off 2013 with a series of four classes designed to teach central Ohioans to appreciate the finer points of coffee and tea. All courses will begin at 7 p.m. Monday evenings at the Coffee House, 4541 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43214.
“These classes are perfect for those who want to become coffee or tea connoisseurs, or even just to order their favorite cup with confidence at any coffee shop,” said Bob Cervas, assistant coffee house manager and coffee specialist, who will lead instruction of the courses.
“Today, coffee and tea are more like fine wines, with infinite varieties that come from specific regions of the world,” he said. “Country of origin, growing conditions, processing, roasting and preparation all affect flavor and enjoyment.”
Yet, he noted, consumer education to date has been informal and hit-or-miss. With Crimson Cup’s new educational sessions, central Ohioans will be able to grow their knowledge, palate and appreciation for high-grade coffee and tea.
Over a series of four courses, repeated monthly, consumers will learn how coffees and teas from different parts of the world taste, how to prepare an exceptional cup and how to appreciate subtle nuances in flavor. The cost to participate is $10 to $20 per class, which includes instruction, consumption of coffee or tea during the class and a sample bag of coffee or tea to take home from the class.

C102 • Single Cup Brewing – January 14, 2013
During this class, Crimson Cup will prepare the same coffee using three different single-cup brewing methods: the Chemex, Hario v60, and Press Pot (or French Press). Comparisons will be drawn among the differences that each method produces in coffee flavor and why someone would choose one over the others. Cost of the class is $20, and attendees will receive a sample bag of coffee as well as a 15 percent discount off brewing equipment.
C103 • Origin Tasting (repeated each month) – January 21, 2013
Each class will feature the week’s featured Brew Bar coffee, usually a single-origin varietal. Cupping techniques and protocol will be taught and followed. Background on each coffee will be provided, and participants will share their perceptions of the taste, flavor, aroma, body, and acidity of the coffee. Cost to participate is $10, and attendees will receive a sample bag of coffee as well as a drink from the coffee house Brew Bar.
T101 • Introduction to Tea – January 28, 2013
This class will delve into Camellia Sinensis - the tea plant. Participants will learn the methods used to process this plant and resulting teas – white, green, black, Oolong and Pu’erh. Herbal and Rooibos tea alternatives also will be discussed, along with health benefits associated with each. The cost to participate is $15, and participants will receive a 25% discount off any tea or equipment.
C101 • Coffee – What, Where and How – February 4, 2013
This introductory class is meant to provide a crash course on all things coffee. Topics include: What exactly is a coffee bean? Where can you grow great coffee and why do different regions make the coffee taste different? How is the coffee picked, processed, roasted and brewed? Cost to participate is $15, and each attendee will receive an eight-ounce bag of coffee to take home.
