Health Alert: Doctors are removing a vital organ by mistake

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Thousands of people may be having their kidney removed unnecessarily. A study in the Lancet finds doctors are misdiagnosing many patients with a genetic disorder called TSC. The condition causes tumors on the kidney and doctors often mistake it for cancer and remove the organ. Researchers say surgery is not necessary because medication can usually dissolve the tumors.

(CBS) - A breath test may soon be used to diagnose lung infections. Scientists at the University of Vermont discovered certain compounds show up in the breath if there is a lung infection. They developed an accurate test for mice and are now working on one for people.

(CBS) - Doctors say women who've had weight loss surgery should wait a year before trying to get pregnant. A British study shows there is a higher risk of miscarriage in the first twelve months after bariatric surgery. In some cases women who got pregnant too soon after a procedure damaged surgical changes made to the stomach.
