LONGVIEW (KYTX) – Officials from Leading Edge Medical Associates announced today the appointment of a new Emergency Department Medical Director at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview (GSMC-L).  Gregory Payne, MD, Board Certified emergency physician, assumed the leadership role on January 1.

Drs. John DiPasquale and Stan Upchurch have served as co-medical directors since Longview Emergency Medicine Associates began providing Emergency Physician services at Good Shepherd Medical Center in 1998. Since that time, the group name has changed their name to Leading Edge Medical Associates (LEMA). LEMA provides board certified emergency medicine physicians and mid-level staff for all of the Good Shepherd Emergency Departments located in Longview, Marshall, Linden and Kilgore.

Prior to joining LEMA, Dr. Payne was a member of the Emergency Medicine Faculty at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX.  Dr. Payne has been a partner of LEMA since January 1999.  He was appointed as the Emergency Medicine Medical Director at GSMC-Linden in October of 2011. Dr. Payne received his medical degree from UT Southwestern in Dallas and completed an Internal Medicine residency at Parkland Hospital. His Emergency Medicine residency was completed at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Payne is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American College of Physician Executives and the American Medical Association.

"We are proud of how our physician group has grown and remained a constant for Emergency Services in the Good Shepherd system," said John DiPasquale, MD. "Our physicians are dedicated to the patients who seek care in the emergency department and are committed to providing personalized, quality medical care."

Since establishing the practice in 1998, Leading Edge Medical Associates now serves as East Texas' largest independent group of Emergency physicians and has experienced a 96 percent provider retention rate. The group has grown from caring for approximately 55,000 annual patient visits in one location to more than 140,000 annual patient visits in four locations this year. LEMA will staff the upcoming free standing emergency department located in North Longview next to the Institute for Healthy Living. Since the practice formed, they have cared for approximately 1.5 million patients from the Longview/Northeast Texas area.

"In the 22 years I have been practicing in Longview, one of the greatest improvements in the quality of care to patients in this area was the addition and development of this group of Emergency Physicians," said Matt Holcomb, general surgeon. "They are superb physicians as a group. Selecting Dr. Payne to serve as their new medical director is an excellent choice, as he is an outstanding clinician with exceptional knowledge, judgment and bedside manner."

The physicians of Leading Edge Medical Associates are committed to providing a high level of customer service to each and every patient. They are currently involved in development of innovative communication software between patients and providers that will improve the patient's experience both in the Emergency Department and inpatient setting.

"Our goal has always been to provide the highest level of care possible for our patients," said Stan Upchurch, MD. "Each and every one of our physicians and mid-level providers are always seeking ways to improve the patient's experience in the Emergency Department."

Before 1995, only one Emergency Department physician lived in Longview. Today, LEMA has 39 healthcare providers with families who reside in the Longview area and actively participate in their communities. Every LEMA provider gives back to the community through volunteer involvement and community commitments that include school board leadership, little league coaches, Highway 80 Rescue Mission, Alpine Compassion Clinic and Medical Missions to countries like Haiti, Nigeria, Guatemala, Ecuador and Malawi.
