UPDATE: SMITH COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Holly Shaw, a neighbor who lived across the street from Larry Joe Smith, testified this morning that she and her husband frequently checked on the defendant because he was alone.

Smith was often intoxicated, Ms. Shaw said, and would offer them a drink when they would come by to see about him.

"But he was always respectful, even on his worst days, " Ms. Shaw told the jury. She testified that on the night of March 16, she heard a gunshot between 10 and 11 p.m., and then saw police on her street in a rural area of Smith County.

SMITH COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Prosecutors and defense gave opening statements in the 114th District Court this morning about the March shooting death of Sandra Greenhaw, who had been romantically involved with Larry Smith, 68.

Smith had an alcohol level of over twice the legal limit after he was arrested.

Smith told police he thought Ms. Greenhaw was an intruder who had tried to come through his window.

Defense Attorney Lajuanda Lacy said it was dark inside her client's house with only the light from his television available. Ms. Lacy said Ms. Greenhaw's blood alcohol level said was also over twice the legal limit.
