Longview teachers offered pay incentive

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Teaching middle school math is not only a challenge at times for Georgetta McCallister, but for some of her students as Well.

"Each child learns a little differently and sometimes it takes other things too."

Mrs. McCallister teaches at Foster Middle School. She thinks the newly implemented teacher reward system will show positive results in Longview ISD.

 "In doing this, I see from my standpoint that the children are learning."

One of the main reasons L.I.S.D has approved the program that will offer middle school English, Language Arts, and Math teachers a bonus in pay as their students show progress in the classroom. The program was approved Monday evening by the board of trustees for the Longview Independent School District.

"This program is tied to the growth of individuals."

L.I.S.D spokesman Adam Holland says the new policy recognizes that growth is not about every student reaching the same level of achievement, it's about every individual student's improvement each year.

"It's not always so easy to reach those really struggling students and that's what we intend to do with this."

Along with taking some of the tension and focus off of the many state mandated tests.

"All students are not great test takers but it does not mean that they are not understanding what's going on."

"We are providing an incentive for teachers to dig deeper and to get down there in the trenches."

He says the amounts for each performance pay incentive award have not yet been set.

"Don't know a whole lot about it right now, but the little I do know, I like it and I know it's going to be great for us."
