1 suspect in custody after early morning robbery near UT Tyler

TYLER (KYTX) - On Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 4:44 a.m. Tyler Police responded to an Armed Robbery at Food Fast - Exxon, located at 4201 University Blvd. 

The store clerk told officers that he was outside the store smoking when he was approached by two black males wearing all black, ski masks and armed with handguns. 

The suspects took the clerk inside the store and demanded cash from the register. A customer walked into the store during the robbery and was not harmed.  The suspects fled on foot to the rear of the store when police were called. 

Upon searching the area behind the store with a police K-9 they located one of the suspects lying in the wooded area who had been shot in the lower right leg.  Officers located a gun and other evidence linking him to the robbery. 

Officials said Wednesday afternoon, that the suspect's injury may have been accidentally self-inflicted.

The suspect was identified as Jaqun Jamel Dawson, 18, of Dallas.  Dawson was transported to a local hospital and was treated for his injury.  Investigators will be seeking an arrest warrant for aggravated robbery on Dawson today. 

Officers set up a perimeter, but were not able to locate the second suspect after several hours of searching. 

Anyone with information about the suspects involved in this crime is urged to contact the Tyler Police Department, at 903-531-1000, or Crimestoppers at 903-597-CUFF (903-597-2833). Crimestoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and charges filed against the suspects in this case or any felony case. 

This case remains under investigation.

 


TYLER (KYTX) - One man is in custody another on the loose after an armed robbery at a convenience store near UT Tyler.

 

The robbery happened at the Exxon Food Fast at Old Omen and University Boulevard just before 5 a.m.

Tyler police say a clerk was outside on a smoke break when two armed black men in ski masks ordered him inside and demanded money.

Tyler police were able to find one suspect hiding in the woods. He suffered a gun shot to the leg, but it's not clear who shot him.

Police continue to search for another suspect.

Beverly Golden with UT Tyler says the university did send a warning to faculty and students.

Classes will go on as scheduled this morning.
