LISD and first responders discuss emergency plans

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW - GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - It's all started because first responders and local law enforcement say they want everyone from students to S.W.A.T to be on the same page if an emergency were to occur in any of the districts 12 schools."

As students at Longview High School went about their day, discussions were underway at the district's administration building, about how to keep them safe in an emergency.

"It makes me feel really good to know that people are on top of things doing the next step."

Shawn Guerrero's two sons go to Longview High School.

She says regardless of their age, she stresses the importance of knowing their surroundings.

"They're always aware of the type of people that are around them."

It's one of the many topics discussed in Wednesday's Emergency Operations Meeting, along with what should and would be done in case of an on campus emergency like a bomb threat, child abduction, or a shooting.

"Here on the campus of Longview High School, they have a Director of Campus Operations and he says his job is to sit here and look at these cameras and make sure everyone is where they're supposed be and that there is no unauthorized person on campus."

Putting senior Jalen Johnson's mind at ease.

"I'm all over the school so to know that there are people around the school looking out for me even when I'm not thinking about it...makes me feel a lot better and a lot safer."

And to the officers working to keep it that way...

"Thank you, thank you for taking our students and our children into consideration and making sure our teacherS and our staff is well informed of what to do."

In today's meeting officers discussed the possibility of having a simulated on-campus emergency to be sure everyone knows their places and what their expected to do if one were to occur.
