HOUSTON (KHOU) -- A new state-of-the-art treatment for chronic pain is offering hope to a former Houston Oiler great, and to people living with macular disorders who dream of a better life.

Earl Campbell, who's suffered through several back surgeries, is one of the latest high-profile people to be treated by a device called "Vecttor."

It was designed by Houston-area pain physician Dr. Donald Rhodes.

"It's a completely different way of looking at the world," said the doctor while describing his invention.

Vecttor uses electrodes to help increase oxygen levels in the blood stream and improve circulation.

If it works, it could give Campbell, who's suffered from chronic pain for years, a new lease on life.

"What we're hoping to do is improve his quality of life and improve his ability to walk."

Videos posted on line by Rhodes and his team show dramatic results. Recently, the FDA approved Vecttor for the treatment of chronic pain but soon it will be tested out on patients with Muscular Dystrophy as part of a clinical trial in Houston.

Campbell uses a walker to get around.

But after just one hour-long session using the device, he thinks already starting to feel its effects.

"Even when I stand I used to have so much back pain," he said.  "But I don't have pain right now.
