MLK: Remembering 'The Dream'

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Some marchers said they were happy to celebrate Martin Luther King Day today, and marching while the first African American president Barack Obama held his second Inauguration, made it even more special.

And those who participated in Longview's annual Martin Luther King junior march took every step with that idea in mind.

Richard Manley is Longview's District 5 City Councilman. He says today's Inauguration is a prime example of Dr. Kings dream.

"I thought that it was a especially significant thing that President Obama is being sworn in on a day like today."

A day celebrated by all 50 states since the year 2,000 as Martin Luther King Day.

"Even the pennicle of being the President of the United States is an opportunity for anyone in this country regardless of the color of their skin or where they come from."

So like many years past, marchers lined up at Longview's Broughten Recreation Center on MLK Boulevard to march in remembrance of the King and his dream of equality for all.

"Dr. Martin Luther King represented prophecy of what my future would be, of what my kids future was, my grand-kids being doctors, lawyers, bishops.

After nearly 52 years, Peggy Gibson's says today was her first time participating in Longview's MLK march.

"You know I felt like I needed to be involved in the equality, not just see it, but I actually wanted to be present in it."

Along with more than 100 people in Longview who believe in the dream.

"Feel the presence of him looking down at us today at where we have evolved."

"We're thanking him for what his dream was and it came true."

a marcher told me today that people in Longview will see new events in the future to honor the life, legacy and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
