SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - Larry Joe Smith, of Whitehouse, was found guilty of murder, a first-degree felony, Thursday.

Smith has been sentenced to 42 years in prison, with parole eligibility after 21 years.

WHITEHOUSE (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to present closing arguments today in the murder trial of a Whitehouse man accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend in March because he thought she was an intruder trying to come through the window of his home.

Larry Joe Smith, 69, is charged with the murder of his former girlfriend, Sandra Greenhaw, whom he allegedly shot in the chest on March 16. He faces up to life in prison if convicted of the first-degree felony, prosecutor Whitney Tharpe said.

Karen Ream, a forensic scientist with the Department of Public Safety lab in Tyler, testified Friday that Smith's blood alcohol content was .165, which is more than twice the legal limit for driving. She said it would take someone drinking the equivalent amount of alcohol found in eight or nine drinks, or about 1 ½ ounces of alcohol per drink, for someone to have a blood alcohol content at that level.

Ms. Lacy asked about the effects on an individual with such a high amount of alcohol in his system. "There could be a loss of judgment, a loss of reaction, and reduced visual acuity — the peripheral vision is reduced," Ms. Ream said. She added that an experienced drinker or someone who drinks alcohol frequently has a higher tolerance.

Prosecutor Jacob Putnam asked about the effect that a high alcohol content can have on someone. "It results in exaggerated emotional states, coordination and a lot worse," Ms. Ream said.

Norma Smith, the former wife of the defendant, testified on Friday that the only light on the inside of Smith's home came from a light bulb over his chair and a television in the room. Not all of the utilities were turned on inside of Smith's Whitehouse home, his former wife testified.
