Arp Elementary getting new playground

Posted: Updated:

ARP (KYTX) - With the help of $30,0000 from American State Bank plus donations from East Texas community members, Arp Elementary students will soon have a new place to play at recess.

4th grade student Macy Maxwell says she was shocked when she found out this morning.

"I felt like, 'wow, we're really going to get a playground!'"

"We have a lot of things for them to play with, like basketballs and hula hoops, and jump ropes. But, we just don't have a big structured playground for our bigger kids to play on."

Now, that's all going to change. And eight-year-old Hayden Wright says he couldn't be happier about it.

"We'll have more stuff outside instead of just balls and stuff and ropes."

Arp unfortunately did not win a recent national competition to win money for a new playground, but the school never gave up hope on the East Texas community. And Wednesday, students like Ty Cook found out about the exciting news.

"I was excited because I didn't ever know."

PTO President Patricia Parnell was one of only a handful who did know.

"It was torture having to keep this quiet for several days."

"I know I'm going to slide. I'm going to do all of it because we haven't got a playground since, ever."

"I just want to say 'thank you' from the bottom of my heart, and all of our little Arp tigers are saying 'thank you,' too."

The school's upcoming fundraiser at Mooyah Burgers and Shakes is still happening.

You can support the Arp tigers' new playground at Mooyah on South Broadway in Tyler January 29 from 5-9 p.m.
