HARRIS COUNTY (KHOU) -- Harris County Sheriff's investigators are still looking for the gun involved in Tuesday's shooting at Lone Star College. They said Wednesday that it's possible someone helped the gunman get rid of the weapon since it wasn't found at the scene.

Sheriff Adrian Garcia also said Wednesday that the suspect, 22-year-old Carlton Berry, was taken by ambulance to Northwest Medical Center from the campus. Reporters were told Tuesday that Berry showed up at the hospital two hours after the shooting in the central courtyard.

Garcia said the campus was kept on lockdown because deputies were searching for the gun and they hadn't ruled out the possibility of a second suspect.

Berry was moved to the Harris County Jail where he's being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the buttocks. He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault.

The shooting happened during an argument between Berry and a Lone Star College student named Jody Neal.

Neal, 25, remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and leg. Garcia said he is a student at Lone Star College and Berry also had a student ID.

People who know Berry were shocked to hear that he'd been arrested.

"He always seems to be a good father. He plays with them, places them on his head like any father would do, walks around with them," said Anita, a neighbor.

She said she saw Berry playing outside with his children earlier this week.

"I would never think he is involved with any situation like that," she said.

The maintenance man who was hit in the leg by a bullet Tuesday has been identified as 69-year-old Bobby Ray Cliburn. He also remains hospitalized, but is expected to be OK.

Friends describe Cliburn as a hard worker and good guy.

"His mannerism is perfect in every way. His humor was spot on," said Keith Rose, a friend. "He was the most gracious person."@

A fourth person taken to the hospital Tuesday suffered an anxiety attack.

Garcia said that 10 shots were fired Tuesday and 140 deputies and other law officers responded to the scene. They were on the campus within four minutes.

Garcia wouldn't comment on the motive for the shooting, other than to call it "stupidity" and "a ridiculous, adolescent confrontation."

If you have any information about the case or the missing gun, please call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
