Texas Rangers take over officer involved shooting investigation

Posted: Updated:

ALTO, CHEROKEE COUNTY (KYTX) - A man is dead and the Texas Rangers are investigating an officer involved shooting in Alto.

The Alto Chief of Police says he can't comment on the shooting because it's been turned over to the rangers.

And the Rangers at the scene are not commenting now.

But people in Alto are wondering what happens next.

People who knew the man who was shot and killed crowded the side of Highway 69 near State Highway 21, hoping to get information about what led to shots being fired Wednesday afternoon around 4:30.

According to our news partner The Tyler Morning Telegraph, Capt. John Raffield with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office says the man may have been involved in an attempted robbery for a pack of cigarettes.

He says the man allegedly charged the officer following the attempted robbery.

Friends say the man walks everywhere he goes in town and has a mental disability.

They also say he does yard work to make money and he's never been a problem.

"It makes me angry as well as everyone else that loved him, cared about him, knew him, are angry. But as citizens, what really can we do? To voice our feelings in any other manner than just crying or saying some remarks about the situation," says Ricky Dunn, who knew the man who was shot.

The man's body has been taken in for an autopsy.

The Texas Rangers took over the investigation this evening and were working to figure out how it happened when we left.

We tried to call the Texas Ranger's Austin Office to speak with a public information officer tonight -- and have not heard back.

The chief of police says he cannot comment on whether or not the officer was suspended, it will be up to the Rangers to release any other information.

The officer was not injured in the shooting.

His name is not being released.
